3 million stone blocks without modern cranes or iron tools. A new study now proposes that the answer was built directly into the architectural design of the pyramid itself.
Computer scientist Vicente Luis Rosell Roig has developed a detailed model in which workers utilized several ramps integrated along the monument's edges. These rising paths advanced progressively as each new layer of limestone was completed by the labor force.
Instead of constructing one enormous external ramp requiring vast materials, builders could pull individual blocks on sledges around the perimeter. Once each section was finished, the ramp system would be filled in and effectively disappear inside the completed structure.
