Archaeologists Uncover Three Vessels Filled with 1,800‑Year‑Old Roman Coins in France

The routine dig, prompted by a local housing expansion, uncovered three large amphorae across a 1,500‑square‑metre site. The first two jars held roughly 24,000 and 19,000 coins respectively, weighing about 38 kg and 50 kg.

The third vessel contained only three pieces, suggesting the original owner retrieved most of its contents in antiquity. Researchers argue the caches served as domestic piggy banks rather than emergency war hoards.
